Leisure activities in the Croatian nature park Lonjsko Polje
Spend an unforgettable time in the Sava area of natural beauty and wildlife.
Trips in the Sava area of natural beauty and wildlife
Don’t miss the villages along the Save: Lonja, Čigoć, Mužilovčica, Kratečko, Gušće, Krapje, Puska.
The park management offers ship or boat journeys starting from Drenov Bok. You can also rent boats (Canadian canoes) or bicycles and discover the area off your own bat.
A visit to the nearest towns Sisak, Jasenovac, Kutina, Novska and Nova Gradiška makes a nice contrast to the village way of life in the Save meadows. It is about a one hour drive to reach the vineyards above Kutina or Popovača. A hike leads you to wonderful lookout points. Vineyards along the way invite you to rest and taste the wine.
Fishing at the river Save
The Lonjsko Polje is a true fisher’s paradise. No matter if you fish on the banks of the Save, Lonja or other rivers or from a boat, you can catch pikes, carps (the Save meadows are one of Europe’s largest carp spawning grounds), asps, catfish, zander, burbot and many other fish. We are happy to help you find courses for traditional fishing – as it is usually done in this area. Fishing maps can be bought at low cost in the park’s information centers.
Wildlife observation in the Croatian nature park Lonjsko Polje
Countless animal species move freely in the Lonja Field. Some are autochthonous races, which occur only in this area. Turopolje pigs, Possavina horses and Podolac cattle live freely together with the feral jackal, wild pigs and many other animals in the entire area of the meadows.
Canoeing at the river Save
Waters of many different kinds invite you to go canoeing. Everything is within easy reach: the large river Save with its backwaters, small rivers such as the Lonja as well as standing waters. Canadian canoes can be rented from the park management in Krapje or in Čigoć (including pick-up and return service).
Nature photography in Lonja
There are things to be photographed everywhere and for all preferences. Nature in all varieties, flora and fauna in unbelievable diversity, in many shapes and forms depending on the time of day and the weather conditions. We are happy to help you find locations for professional or semi professional photo shootings as well as workshops.
Bird observation – ornithology in Croatia (stork, European spoonbill)
243 kinds of bird, which are at home in Lonjsko Polje, have been counted so far. The best known representatives are European spoonbills (the heraldic animal of the Lonjsko Polje), cormorants, white and black storks, many different kinds of heron, sea eagles, lesser spotted eagles, kingfishers and many more. The park rangers will lead you to the observation places and most certainly reveal some of their secret tips. It is only a short hike from the park’s information center in Krapje to the observation station (look-out tower) at the edge of the Krapje Dol. The wetland is the breeding area of one the largest European spoonbill rookeries and of many types of heron.
